2018 Chardonnay (Chablis, 'Les Clos Grand Cru)Christian Moreau
The Moreau family has been rooted in the heart of Chablis since 1814. At that time JeanJoseph Moreau founded the wine-merchant trading firm. In 1974 Hiram Walker acquired 50% of the company and acquired the remaining shares in 1985. J. Moreau et Fils was then sold with no member of the family remaining in the company to Boisset in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The Moreau family retained ownership of their vineyard holdings throughout these transitions.
With the 2002 vintage, Christian Moreau Père & Fils regained their right to produce wines sourced from their extensive vineyard holdings and market the wines under their own name. Today, Fabien Moreau, the sixth generation of the family, is the super-star winemaker of this beautiful Domaine in Chablis.
Terroir: Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils owns a total of 7.5 acres of this most famous of the Grand Crus of Chablis, more than any other producer in the region. Their primary parcel sits on the high portion of the hillside with a direct southeast exposure. With the steep grade, drainage of the kimmeridgien soils is quick leading to low yields of the densely planted vines.
Vinification: A sizable 40% of the final blend is aged in oak cask, although only a small percentage is new barrels. The oak contact is unobtrusive and is a testament to the sheer power of this Grand Cru.
"The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is airy and gracious - not unlike the Blanchot in feel - with added layers of textural richness and depth. Apricot, citrus confit, crushed rocks, oak and light tropical overtones add character to this beautifully layered, nuanced Clos. A Chablis of reserve and class, the 2018 has a very bright future, as suggested by the floral, tightly wound finish. The 2018 was done 60% in steel and 40% in oak."
