2015 Chenin Blanc, 'Les Rosiers' (Jasnieres)Domaine de Belliviere
Eric Nicolas produces some of the best wines of the Loire Valley and has a genial touch with Chenin Blanc. Work in the vineyard has always been organic and was certified as such from 2005, and eventually the estate was fully converted to biodynamic viticulture in 2008. This is not something to be undertaken lightly; In such cool, damp climes oidium, downy mildew and rot is far more likely than in the warm and breezy vineyards of the south.
Today Eric is famous for a magical and rare range of dry and gently dry Chenin Blanc produced from over 50 small parcels in Jasnières and the Coteaux-du-Loir. Everything he does is meticulous and the results are miracu- lous.
In the top French wine guide, La Revue du Vin de France, he is given two stars and the same billing as François Cotat in Sancerre, which is no surprise, as his wines are every bit as good, indeed the very best French hotels and restaurants form an orderly queue with each release. These take their place easily alongside the best white wines of France.
Peach, quince, and lily-of-the-valley seduce the nose, and a lovely creaminess and delicacy on the palate perfectly match this wine's character of a floral inhalation with rarefied pit fruit essences. Smooth, substancial and glossy, this lingers caresssingly and delicately yet with formidable concentration of fruit and flowers. Open up 30mins prior to serving.
